New roles covering Mission Management, Vehicle Assembly & Service, Technical Operations, and remote piloting will be staffed from Denmark, giving Saildrone the ability to deploy and sustain its USV fleet directly in-theatre rather than routing logistics through its Alameda, California base.
The three build contracts divide production responsibility by platform class. Van Der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands will produce the first European-built example of the 52-metre Saildrone Spectre. Umoe Mandal in Norway — a shipyard with deep expertise in high-speed naval craft — will manufacture the next generation of the 20-metre Saildrone Surveyor. Southern Spars, operating from Poland, will fabricate the composite wingsail structures for the Surveyor, a component central to the platform's hybrid propulsion architecture.
The expansion is backed by a financial runway established in April 2025, when Saildrone announced a $60 million funding round led by EIFO — the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark — and incorporated a European subsidiary. Operations in Danish waters began two months after that round closed. A six-month trial deployment with the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation subsequently put four Saildrone Voyager USVs to work supporting the Royal Danish Navy in the Baltic Sea, accumulating more than 20,000 nautical miles and recording 92% fleet uptime in harsh sea states while detecting over 170,000 unique contacts.
