The aircraft is Swarm's formal entry into the Pentagon's Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) programme, which seeks a sub-$10 million attritable successor to the MQ-9A Reaper.

On 14 September 2026, Oxnard, California-based startup Swarm Aero took the wraps off Gamera — a full-scale model of a new Group 5 unmanned aircraft system — at the Air & Space Forces Association's Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The reveal marks the company's first public hardware showing since it was founded in 2022, and constitutes a direct bid for the U.S. Air Force and Defense Innovation Unit's Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) programme, which is seeking a cheaper, more attritable successor to the MQ-9A Reaper.

The design philosophy is deliberately contrarian. Rather than pursue low-observable geometry or edge-technology avionics, Swarm co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer Oliver Palmer told Breaking Defense: "What we've done cuts against the conventional wisdom. And what we've done instead is create a very simple, non-stealthy aircraft that's optimized for extreme range." That framing aligns with publicly stated Air Force guidance: senior officials have indicated the initial MMA will rely largely on proven — rather than cutting-edge — technology as the primary lever for hitting aggressive cost targets.

The MMA programme itself was formalised in a DIU solicitation released on 7 July 2026, which describes the Joint Force's need for "a cost-effective, theater-range, massed, and modular Unmanned Aerial System to provide a flexible, operationally-responsive, risk-tolerant option in the air domain." The solicitation specifies a payload capacity of at least 2,800 pounds, an unrefueled combat radius of at least 2,300 nautical miles, and a self-deploy ferry range of at least 8,000 nautical miles, with a target unit cost of approximately $10 million per air vehicle and an Initial Operating Capability goal of FY2031. Gamera's published specifications are engineered to meet or exceed every one of those thresholds.

Swarm's investment in the design dates to the company's founding. The team set three internal engineering requirements before any formal MMA requirement existed: carry an LRASM-class weapon, transit from outside the second island chain to a patrol area with hours of on-station time remaining, and achieve the lowest possible unit cost. That self-imposed roadmap — and roughly four years of government contracts and private investment — gives the company what it characterises as a development-maturity advantage over more recently declared competitors.
